“FedEx Corp. and the Christmas SPIRIT Foundation have officially kicked off the annual “Trees for Troops” program in Columbus, Ohio.

The program gives more than 20,000 trees to activated service members and their families stationed overseas. ”

“The U.S. military is sending 3,000 soldiers home from Diyala province, the second large unit to leave Iraq as troop levels are cut after a 30,000-strong “surge” earlier this year.Soldiers from the 3rd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, will not be replaced by a new unit when they leave the ethnically and religiously mixed province north of Baghdad by January, U.S. military officials said on Tuesday.”

“More than 70 students in kindergarten through sixth-grade gathered in the project room at Mesquite Elementary Thursday to write letters to U.S. troops in the Arizona National Guard 1-158 Bushmasters Battalion in Afghanistan.Brightly-colored world maps and pictures of several troops lay at each table, along with a crayons, pencils and neatly printed stationery.
