Walt Mueller has sent over 580 care packages to troops over the last four years. However, this is not a competition and every little bit counts. Sometimes a simple letter makes all the difference.

Eight-year-old Tye Brown-Wolf is just one of the many kids reaching out to soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq. Like other local kids, he writes letters to put in packages that Walt Mueller, as part of the Summit County Rotary Club, sends.

FedEx to deliver Christmas trees to military

FedEx Corp. and the Christmas SPIRIT Foundation have officially kicked off the annual “Trees for Troops” program in Columbus, Ohio.

The program gives more than 20,000 trees to activated service members and their families stationed overseas. ”

US pulling 3,000 troops from Iraq

The U.S. military is sending 3,000 soldiers home from Diyala province, the second large unit to leave Iraq as troop levels are cut after a 30,000-strong “surge” earlier this year.Soldiers from the 3rd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, will not be replaced by a new unit when they leave the ethnically and religiously mixed province north of Baghdad by January, U.S. military officials said on Tuesday.”

Students write letters to troops in Afghanistan

“More than 70 students in kindergarten through sixth-grade gathered in the project room at Mesquite Elementary Thursday to write letters to U.S. troops in the Arizona National Guard 1-158 Bushmasters Battalion in Afghanistan.Brightly-colored world maps and pictures of several troops lay at each table, along with a crayons, pencils and neatly printed stationery.

“Does anyone here have a loved one that is serving in another country?” asks Maria Longley, Mesquite Elementary Kids Care Club Coordinator.”

Can we support the troops but not the war?

“For many there is a dichotomy surrounding the question of supporting our troops while attempting to maintain a stance against the Iraq War.  Someone near to you serving in Iraq will probably least understand the sentiment as their efforts to help stabilize Iraq while attempting to rid the country of the terrorist groups the war invited in is very hard to see.  Many families and friends see the support of one being somehow connected to the support of the other.”
